Have you taken the daunting leap of faith and started your own business? That dream you’ve always had of being your own boss, running your own business, doing what you love. It feels good, right? It doesn’t just stop there. You want your dream to grow and be successful, so you need to focus on what you do best. In this super short, sweet, and simple blog, we’ll share with you our top tips and secrets to help you focus on whatever it is that you do best in your business.
Figure out what it is that you do best

We know we’re stating the obvious here – have you ever actually taken a break to stop and think about what it is that you’re good at? Are you an excellent people person? Are you a cracking salesperson? Maybe you’re not so great at the face to face stuff yet you’re fab at the behind the scenes stuff, supporting others.
Now’s your chance to stop for a second and really think about it. What do you do best? What do you really enjoy the most when it comes to work? As a kid, what did you love doing? What was your favourite job and why. Pull all those loves and joys together and you won’t be far off.
Thought about it? Got it? Good. Now focus on that.
As a business owner, we often take on all roles and responsibilities – every department of a big business. We go all out. Say yes to everything when we first start, then do the learning as we go along. That’s normal for many. You very quickly work out what sits in which camp – like that – don’t like that. When you’re the founder, CEO, administrator, head of marketing, brew maker, IT, and everything in between something has to give. By figuring out what it is that you’re a pro at, you can start to focus on that then you really do start to love what you do, and you do it very well. If you’re a whizz at baking delicious treats focus on that. Spread yourself too thinly and your product or service will ultimately suffer.
We’re guessing alarm bells are ringing? “Who’s going to do my accounts?”, “What will I post on social media?”, “Who’s going to manage my orders?”. Don’t press the panic button, we’ve got answers for you. Quit being a control freak and learn how to share.
Bring in the experts

Getting in an extra pair of hands doesn’t mean you’re waving the white flag of surrender. It’s actually a really wise choice when running your own business. Why? Because it means you’re freeing up your valuable time to focus on what you do best and continue to provide the highest quality. It is okay to ask for help and have each person playing to their strengths.
Investing in an expert in the areas you’re not the strongest in allows you to chase those leads, make sales, and maintain high standards. And the plus side? Those experts are the best in what they do. It can only result in better business management and overall success. Outsourcing or taking on your first employee takes the overwhelm away, so they can do the stuff you don’t want to. Your time is precious.
Remember: Make time for yourself too. More often than not, we let the candle burn too much from both ends and this can result in a lack of motivation and being stuck in a rut. Let’s not do that, eh?
The takeaway
See? We told you it was short and sweet. What’s the takeaway?
Know what you’re good at: Finding your niche, your focus, and what you do best will help you know where you should be focussing your efforts. This is productive and saves time in the long run. We’ve all been there – trying helplessly to do the things that we struggle with. Like our grandparents using technology – it’s easier to just get somebody else to do it. Do what you do best and outsource the rest when running your business.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help: Following on from our last point, don’t be afraid to acknowledge what you’re bad at, or simply don’t want to do. Once you’ve admitted this, you can get an expert in to do it for you. A part time or full time employee, or outsource to an expert. Think of all the time you’ll save not having to try and wrap your head around every aspect of your business. Time you can spend doing what you do best. Free your head up, make space, get creative.
Always make time for yourself: Lots of business owners feel guilty for taking a moment for themselves. The constant ‘grind culture’ is looming over us 24/7. Running yourself into the ground isn’t the way to go. You set up your business to do what you do best and achieve that ultimate goal. Remember that extra time we mentioned earlier? Use it to recharge. Spend it with your family, friends, or even alone if that’s what you need. Catch up on that Netflix show that everyone’s been talking about. Get outdoors, meditate, workout. Do what you need to do to recharge and be at your best. Why wouldn’t you want to be your best self.
